BRIGHT young things from Bolton will be buzzing as they battle it out to be crowned the best young spelling bees.

Kate Hackney and Jasmine De Goede will be appearing on Sky 1 in new family entertainment show The Big Spell, to uncover the nation’s best young speller in the UK and Ireland.

The show, a huge hit in Australia, will see young people go word to word in the ultimate spelling showdown, presented by Great British Bake-Off’s Sue Perkins, comedian Joe Lycett and broadcaster Moira Stuart.

They will compete in a range of challenges based around spelling, words and meanings.

Kate, aged 13, said: “I found out about it at school and my friend said I should apply because I am good at spelling.

“Everyone comes to me if they want to know how to spell a word.”

The girls had to take part in a series of auditions to get on the show.

Jasmine, aged 10, added: “I like spelling and I am good at it.

“There were many rounds of auditions including making a video. As I progressed I became more confident. I enjoyed making the video and showing the teamwork with my dad, who is also on the show.”

Kate said: “I was a bit nervous but I was confident about my spelling, so I was okay.

“I did not believe it when my mum told me I got through.”

The girls find themselves putting their spelling abilities to the test in a number of testing rounds, including word duel, letter by letter and a round called show and spell, in which contestants have to correctly identify a word from a series of clues.

Kate said: “We had a lot of laughs filming. It was quite nerve racking being on stage with all these cameras but we had a lot of fun as well.”

Jasmine said: “I practised some difficult words with my dad and went over ones I already knew. Throughout the course of this, I discovered that there are a lot more words in this world than I actually realised.

“It was really fun to compete with other children who had a similar talent to me, and who are so competitive but friendly at the same time.”

Across the eight-part series, audiences will get to know all about the two as they experience the highs and lows of the competition with their parents looking on from backstage.

The Big Spell launches on Sunday at 5pm on Sky 1.
