A MAN was Tasered during a police stand-off which lasted more than five hours this morning.

The Taser ‘gun’ was deployed by officers outside a house after the man smashed a bedroom window and climbed on to the ledge outside.

Police and ambulance vehicles had swooped in Sharman Street, Burnden, just before 5.40am.

Seven police vans and cars, as well as three ambulances, attended the scene following reports of a domestic incident.

The convoy of vehicles was on guard outside the property until 11.30am.

When the man smashed the upstairs window and climbed on the ledge outisde, police officers managed to persuade him to go back inside.

However, after they became increasingly concerned for his safety, he was Tasered, said a spokesman.

A number of residents were woken up by the commotion and gathered in the street.

Peter Hassall, who lives in Fortune Street, said: “I heard some noise this morning and came out to see all the police and ambulance lining the streets.

"I live just behind where they were called to but can’t see anything from my house. It’s usually quite quiet around here and I think the last major police incident was about two to six months ago.

"Other than that the neighbours all know each other and seem to get on all right, so we don’t know exactly what happened.”

A police spokesman said: “Specialist police negotiators spoke to the man and he went back inside the property but officers were concerned for the man’s safety and Taser was deployed to safely resolve the incident.”

The man was taken to Royal Bolton Hospital with minor injuries.
No one else was injured.

A 41-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of affray.
