FLY-tippers have dumped piles of rubbish near Queens Park.

The junk, made up mainly of building materials, was left on Chorley Street car park next to the River Croal.

According to an eye witness, some of the rubbish has blown off the car park and into the water.

Brian Duffy, who walks through the park every morning, took pictures of the mess and described it as an “eyesore”.

He said: “I walk past here every day and I have been seeing huge amounts of fly-tipping taking place in the Chorley Street car park since before Christmas.

“A lot of it appears to be industrial and building materials rather than domestic rubbish and it’s blowing into the trees and hedges that border the car park. Some of it is even being blown into the River Croal. It’s so shocking because so much work has been done to clean up the park. And now that particular area is becoming a bit of an eyesore.”

Mr Duffy, who lives on Park Road, believes that trucks are gaining access by driving over the verge and around the posts at the Chorley Street entrance.

And he wanted to know why the issue was not being dealt with — as it has been happening regularly over the last few weeks.

He said: “There are no barriers there to stop anyone and they are really large piles. It’s a significant amount.

“I just can’t understand why nothing is being done about it. The items there are obviously truck loads that are being dropped off. I can’t understand why a simple camera or barrier hasn’t been installed.”

A spokesman from Bolton Council said: “We will continue to crack down on fly-tipping and we’d like to thank the public for bringing this to our attention.

"We will send a team to investigate the rubbish for any evidence which may allow us to fine or prosecute those responsible and we will then remove the waste. If the public have any information about this fly-tip or saw it happen, please can they contact us on 01204 336632.”
