CHILDREN went on a treasure hunt — in their PE lessons.

Pupils at Blackrod Church School overcame challenges and obstacles as they worked together to solve the clues to find the hidden "gems" in the gym.

The young treasure hunters competed in teams to in a bid to be the champions.

The activity was organised as part of the school's work to develop a love of sports among its primary school pupils, which Blackrod Church Primary School was recognised for when it netted the title of Bolton Primary Sports Awards Winners.

Headteacher James Royal said: "Naturally, we are delighted to have been judged best in the above provision of all 100 or so primary schools in Bolton. It's thanks to the dedication, skill and professionalism of our amazing staff and wonderfully supportive parents that we have been able to offer such amazing sports provision.

"We owe a huge debt of gratitude to Daniel Hopkins, our Sports Leader. His endless enthusiasm, encouragement and inspiration ensure all our pupils get a fantastic range of opportunities and the encouragement they need to love sports."

The village primary school ensures that youngsters are eat the top of their game when it comes to sporting activities, be it for leisure or to develop their talent in the field.

Pupils are able to experience as many different types of sporting opportunities as possible.

The award recognised the quality and amount of PE offered in school, school clubs, teams and competitions pupils are members of, sporting trips, the facilities and equipment available — and the introduction of new sports delivered.

This year, the school is looking to introduce cycling and other activities after seeking views of pupils.

Sports put on for active youngsters includes everything from football to Twikando. Pupils have gone on to play for clubs outside school and gone for trials for professional clubs.

Mr Hopkins said: "I love giving children of all ages the opportunity to enjoy a full range of sports, develop friendships, skills, healthy lifestyles and as importantly life long memories."

Lucas Smith, aged 11, said: "It's a privilege to come to such a great school where the sports teaching is the best in Bolton. This is where the sports stars of the future are."

Clarity Brabin, aged 10, said: "It's great because it helps you to feel fit and healthy."

Louis Royal, aged nine, said: "It's great exercise and helps keep your mind healthy and ready for learning."
