A NEW educational trust to help young people from deprived areas enter careers in medicine, healthcare, science, engineering and technology is being set up with the help of a leading figure from the University of Bolton.

Dr Zubair Hanslot, the provost of the University of Bolton and chief executive of the town’s National Centre for Motorsport Engineer is helping in an advisory capacity Mustafa Mohammed, the founder and owner of dentistry business Genix Healthcare.

The trust has unveiled plans to build a £10m free specialist science school in Bradford for 11-to-19-year-olds. It would focus on preparing pupils from deprived areas for careers in medicine, healthcare, science, engineering and technology.

The facility, and a sister school planned for Huddersfield, could both open next year and would be the first in a planned new chain of schools called the Yorkshire Academy. Dr Hanslot and Mr Mohammed previously teamed up to open a University Technical College in Bolton in 2015.

A University of Bolton spokesman said: “The partnership brings considerable expertise and knowhow to delivering outstanding education. We already have a proven track record in the development of UTC Bolton that was conceived, designed, created and opened by the University of Bolton. It was the most successful UTC in attracting 265 students when it opened its doors in September, 2015. That knowledge will be implemented in Yorkshire Academy.”

The steering committee also includes Professor George Holmes, Vice-Chancellor of the university.
