UKIP has come under-fire from eagle-eyed Twitter users after claiming a campaign photo taken in Horwich was actually in Stoke-on-Trent.

On Saturday morning, the party tweeted this photo alongside the caption: “Just some of the UKIP #PeoplesArmy in Stoke-on-Trent here to campaign for @paulnuttallukip #PaulforStoke”

However, social media users pointed out that the picture was in fact taken outside the Macron Stadium, where UKIP’s national spring conference was held on Friday.

A party spokesman said that the picture was taken as activists left Bolton to join the by-election campaign in Stoke, where UKIP leader Paul Nuttall is hoping to be elected.

Cllr Sean Hornby, Bolton UKIP leader, said: “There was a group that went from the Macron to Stoke on Saturday, and I think they might have just put the wrong photo on Twitter.

“I think it is just a genuine mistake and nothing more.”

Mr Nuttall faced calls to resign last week over false claims that close friends of his had died in the Hillsborough tragedy.
