A POPULAR chip shop in Westhoughton suffered a fire at the weekend.

Crews were called to Mick’s Chippy, in Furze Avenue, on Friday evening. Three fire trucks rushed to put out the blaze and no one suffered any injuries.

The chip shop was closed on Saturday night after suffering smoke damage, but the business is hoping to reopen as soon as possible.

The fire is believed to have started in one of the chip shop kitchen appliances.

Jeanette Taylor, aged 33, who lives in a flat above Mick’s Chippy, said she could see flames behind the counter as she watched from outside after leaving the building.

She said: “I saw a lot of smoke and I could see the fire itself, but it wasn’t very big. I think the polystyrene trays in the kitchen probably made things a bit worse.

“The fire brigade checked my house too for carbon monoxide poisoning, but everything was okay. It is a well-liked chippy and part of the community. I have been here since I was 16 and there’s always been the chippy here.”

Another neighbour added: “It’s a shame if anything serious has happened, it’s a good little place.”
