YOUNG entrepreneurs swapped the classroom for the boardroom to show they had what it takes to be Lord Sugar's apprentice.

Devonshire Road Primary School in Heaton put on its annual enterprise week to discover the next Richard Branson.

And the pupils proved they certainly had a head for business by turning their £10 into more than £100 in some cases.

Businesses set up included glitter globes, love potions — as one team cashed in on the Valentine's theme — as well as candy kebabs and much more.

Julie Handley, office administrator, who helped children with their marketing and advertising needs, said: "Every class took part with each given £10 to start up a business — and they were extremely competitive.

"Their ideas were brilliant, they worked well together as a team with the class teachers as mentor. We do have some entrepreneurs. They did make a profit.

"We raised £1,060.82 in just an hour which is the most we have raised since we have been doing it."

Parents flocked to the market where the young businessmen and women were selling their wares.

Ms Handley said: "I bought some chocolate pizza and candy kebab."

The children said they learned a lot by entering the world of business with their class teacher acting as their mentors.

Isabelle Worth, aged nine, said: "I advertised the business over the microphone.

"The best thing was selling things and handling money, it was really fun."

Abdullah Hanif, aged six, added: "We all got to make money for a ball catcher.

"I liked putting gummies and marshmallows on a stick.

"I was very happy because we raised enough money to buy a ball catcher."
