TRIBUTES have been paid to a former parish priest who served his parish for 30 years.

Fr Harry Jones, who served at St Mary’s in Horwich and was Dean of St Peter’s Deanery, died on Monday, February 13 at the age of 73.

He moved to the parish 30 years ago and remained until his retirement in November, 2014.

Parish magazine editor Margaret Caton, aged 72, said that Fr Jones “did so much for the community”.

She added: “He was very much a shepherd of his people.

“Throughout his time he became very well loved.

“He worked very, very hard covering a very big parish as well as being chairman of two schools and Dean of St Peter’s.

“It was a lot to do for one man but he was always approachable and he was very quick-witted. He always had a quip ready.

“He was a lovely preacher — not all hellfire and damnation. He was always preaching about the love of God and his sermons were great.” Fr Jones was ordained in March 1968 and served as Curate at St Joseph’s in Halliwell before succeeding Fr Pilling as parish priest of St Mary’s Church.

During his time he oversaw the renovation of St Mary’s Church, including the installation of a new organ, and St Anthony’s Chapel.

In his role as leader of Catholic education he oversaw the unification of two primary schools to form St Mary’s Roman Catholic Primary.

He served as chairman of governors at that school and for St Joseph’s Roman Catholic Primary School.

Fr Jones was awarded the Horwich Civic Award in 2003 by the town council, who noted his enthusiasm and energy in his role. He was also a passionate fan of Manchester City FC and Wigan Rugby Club. Ms Caton said: “He was there for such a long time and I will certainly miss him for his welcoming nature and his sense of humour.”

The funeral has not yet been finalised.
