PADDY the chocolate coloured Cockapoo dog had a bit of a ‘ruff’ time after getting his head stuck between park railings.

The one-year-old was enjoying a run in Queens Park when he went headfirst into the rails.

Anxious owner Louise Dickinson called the fire brigade who dashed to his rescue, providing a happy ending to the “tail” — and now the pooch is back being his usual energetic self.

The drama unfolded on Tuesday afternoon when Mrs Dickinson, who lives in Heaton, took Paddy for his walk.

She said: “I have had him since he was 12 weeks old. He is always full of beans.

“He just went running down the hill and got his head stuck between the railings. He was quite distressed and I tried to reassure him and get him out. At first I tried to part the railings and then try to twist him. But he was stuck and it was not happening.”

But thanks to firefighters the pooch did not stay stuck for long.

Using special tools, they cut away the railings to free him.

Mrs Dickinson, aged 54, said: “The firefighters were excellent, they reassured Paddy.”

Fortunately Paddy — who helped raise £300 for Derian House in a sponsored walk in September — recovered quickly from his ordeal and is back enjoying his walks in the park.

Mrs Dickinson added: “I think he has forgotten about it. I think I was more traumatised. I was concerned for him, you don’t like to see an animal in distress.”

Paddy was “adopted” at 12 weeks and is Mrs Dickinson’s first dog.

She said: “He is adorable and I chose this breed because of they have a lovely temperament.”

Ian Reid, watch manager at Bolton Central Station: “The dog went running down this hill and couldn’t stop before the railings and its head got stuck.

“He is absolutely fine now and was very pleasant with us. He wasn’t barking or biting at all. We cut the railings and opened them up to free him.

“The owner was really worried and a bit upset when we got there, but it all turned out okay in the end.”
