A MAN has told of his horror after a burglar attempted to break into his home while he and his wife were watching television.

Alan Williams, aged 61, and his wife Jackie, were sitting in their lounge at 9.50pm on Thursday when they heard a loud noise from the back of the bungalow in Sandown Crescent, Little Lever.

When retired civil servant Mr Williams went to check what had happened, he was confronted by a man wearing a hoodie who had smashed a back patio window and was about to enter the house.

The intruder quickly fled when he saw Mr Williams, who called the police.

He said: “It is very alarming. My real worry is what would have happened if I had not been here and my wife was on her own.

“She is a little older than me and it’s not worth thinking about what could have happened.”

He said that the intruder must have come in through the side gate as the security light at the back of the house had been disabled.

“He turned the light around so that it wouldn’t have sensed him,” he said.

Mr Williams said that plans to visit other home owners in the area to let them know what happened and to be aware of any dangers.

“I’m going to tell my neighbours to be aware of anything unusual.

“It’s just ridiculous the way things are at the moment.

“These people have no regard for property or who is living in them.”

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: “Our inquiries are still ongoing and no arrests have been made.

“We are appealing for witnesses and urge anybody with any information to call 101.”
