A TASTE of Horwich heritage hot footed its way on to stage in Sheffield this month.

The Horwich Prize Medal Morris Men (HPMMM) received a standing ovation at the revived Dancing England festival.

The team completed the signature Horwich Polka dance in front of an audience of more than 500 fans of all types of English folk dancing at the City Hall in Sheffield.

Leader Tom Besford said: “This was a fantastic celebration of traditional dance and I am so pleased because I think we did the town of Horwich proud.

“We have a strong team, one or two who have been with us since our own revival in 1976 but we always welcome new dancers and musicians.”

Mr Bedford and foreman Richard Hall are hoping to build on the success and honour the heritage of the group.

He added: “We can do it, we really can and that will be a tribute to the original team started in 1896 which won the medals that gave us our name.”

The team will also be appearing at the Shepley Festival in Yorkshire in May and for the Sidmouth Festival in Devon in August, as well joining the St George’s Day procession at Bank Top and the Horwich Carnival on June 25.
