A RESIDENTIAL street was cordoned off by police after shots were fired at the window of a house.

Officers attended the scene in Roland Road, Deane, at around 10.15am on Tuesday and recovered a bullet and a spent cartridge from the property.

Detectives established that the incident occurred in the early hours of that morning. No one has been reported injured. Enquiries are currently ongoing.

Police tape was put up either side of the semi-detached property at the northern end of the road, closing off the street to cars and pedestrians.

A police van was stationed at the scene today to ensure no one entered the crime scene and a police car replaced the van later in the day.

Several neighbours who live close to the house did not know what had happened and none had heard any gunfire.

But one resident claimed that no one was currently living at the property and that building work was being undertaken to renovate the home.

The man, who did not wish to be named, said: “It is quite frightening. We didn’t think there was anybody living there because they have just rebuilt the house.

“We only heard about it in the morning when someone called us saying there was a police van outside.

“This area used to be lovely when we moved in years ago. It was a nice street, but now it’s changed and we tend to keep to ourselves.

“We will probably stay away from that part of the street now.”

Police confirmed that there was no one in the house when the incident happened.

Colin Hogarth, who lives nearby in High View Street, said: “I know they’ve been doing a bit of building work there for a few months on the house down there.

“But I don’t really know what’s going on, I didn’t hear any sirens or anything.”

Another resident of Roland Road, who also did not want to be named, said they had asked the officer at the scene what was going on but did not get an answer.

He said: “I just came back and saw the police van there. It’s the first time I’ve ever seen something like that around here.

“It must be quite serious if they’ve taped off the road.”

Detective Inspector John Mulvihill, from the Major Incident Team, is leading the investigation. A spokesman for his team confirmed that police would continue to be stationed at the scene.
