AN appeal has been made to help keep Breightmet tidy after an increase in rubbish on the streets.

Residents have requested more bins from Bolton Council to help tackle problems with litter.

At tonight’s area forum meeting, roads around SS Osmund & Andrews R.C. Primary School were identified as places with particular problems when it came to dog fouling and people dumping rubbish on to the roadside.

Susan Banks, who lives near Brodick Drive, said: “I think Bolton is looking really poor with the amount of litter and fly tipping. We need to be more proactive to stop it from happening.

“Since the opening of St Osmund and Andrew's RC Primary School there is a significant lot of dog fouling and litter along Brodick Drive.

“Why are there so few litter bins in the area?

“I have heard you can relocate underused public bins, if we could move one from elsewhere to Brodick Drive that might help tackle the issue. The school should be provided with one and encourage pupils to use it.”

Area co-ordinator John Shannon sympathised with residents but confirmed that a bin could only be relocated from elsewhere in the ward and the request would be looked into.

He added that they were aware of the lack of litter bins in the area and, while litter picking groups had put in vital efforts to keep the community tidy, more needed to be done to prevent litter happening in the first place.

Cllr Debbie Newall added: “I agree we need to be more proactive. If it wasn’t for people like yourselves, involved in the community and going out and helping to litter pick, who knows what it would be like!

“I’m not making excuses but the council has had £150m in the last six years taken out of its budget and that has got to impact somewhere.

“Unfortunately the impact has been in bins and litter, and six years down the road we getting to the bare bones and you can see the impact of the cuts.”
