YOUNG ladies and lords of Bolton travelled back in time to experience life in a Tudor court.

Dressed in 16th century fashion, they were invited to join the holiday festivities at Smithills Hall.

The days of Henry VIII were recreated for youngsters so they could learn more about one of the country's most fascinating periods of history.

Children had the opportunity to try on Tudor costumes before taking to the floor for some traditional dancing to the sounds of a lute.

They enjoyed plenty of merriment as they took part a game of skittles as well as other traditional pastimes enjoyed back in the day as well as examining objects from the period.

And no Tudor day would be complete without remembering King Henry VIII, as they found out more about the monarch on a special trail through the historic hall.

The Tudor activity days were one of many different events arranged for children by Bolton Library and Museum Services to provide them with learning fun over the half-term holiday.

Hall i'th' Wood Museum, Bolton's other historic home, recreated the period with children being invited to make a pomander and try their hand at quill writing.

The two halls are often used by schools to teach children about the Tudor period, with the museums and libraries service being able to transform them into a variety of characters from the past and experience life in the 1500s.

A spokesman for the Bolton Council said: "The Tudor activity days were very popular with youngsters who enjoyed experiencing life in a traditional Tudor court.

"The two halls really do bring history alive for people of all ages and are always a popular attraction with families over the school holidays.

"Bolton Library and Museum Services put on a range of activities to ensure there is plenty of fun to be had while children continue to learn."
