THERE were plenty of adventures to be had when a primary school transformed itself into a real wonderland!

Bowness Primary School in Little Lever brought Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland to life – much to the excitement of its pupils.

Youngsters – and staff – dressed as their favourite characters from the children’s novel including the White Rabbit, Tweedledum and Tweedledee.

Headteacher Victoria Unsworth said: “We chose Alice in Wonderland because we thought we could use it as a hook to engage children in reading and writing.”

She said the special day was about “promoting the love of reading and books”.

Mrs Unsworth added: “We wanted the children to enjoy the experience and use the film and books to recreate, compare and explore parts of the narrative through reading and writing. We even recreated the Mad Hatter’s tea party at lunch time in the hall.

“Our school is a community school and it was lovely to see so many parents attend our assemblies and join in with our parade. Also some parents attended craft making sessions throughout the week to support the children in decorating the hall.

“All the staff made a great effort and I couldn’t be prouder as a headteacher.”

Mollie Travis, aged 10, said: “We did lots of really fun things such as the tea party and reading lots of different books and it looks really funny when we all dressed up.”

Safari Ephraim, aged five said: “Can we do it all again tomorrow, especially the dressing up?”
