A PUPIL from Bolton has helped a school mark its 500th anniversary with the release of a special single.

The Manchester Grammar School teamed up with classical music composer Tarik O’Regan to produce a recording – A Celestial Map of the Sky – to mark the occasion.

Matthew Prudham, aged 18, from Bolton, is a member of the school choir which first performed the piece in April, 2015 at the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester together with the Hallé Youth Choir and the Hallé Orchestra, conducted by Mark Elder.

The piece is inspired by two woodcuts engraved by the German polymath Albrecht Dürer in 1515, the same year in which the school was founded by Hugh Oldham, Bishop of Exeter.

Rob Carey, director of music at The Manchester Grammar School, said: “We are absolutely delighted that members of The Manchester Grammar School choir feature on Tarik’s orchestra album, which holds a special significance for everyone at MGS as the piece was commissioned specifically to commemorate our 500th anniversary.

“Not only is it a dramatic piece of music which I know people will enjoy, but in years to come it will also be of huge historical and archival importance.”
