A SECONDARY school has been given a good mark by the Government's education watchdog.

Elton High School, which this academic year moved into a new multi-million pound building, was graded good in all areas after previously found to have required improvement.

Ofsted inspectors said that pupils enjoy coming to school, are proud of their school and "most are confident in their learning".

The headteacher, Jonathan Wilton was singled out for support.

Inspectors reported: "The headteacher has created a culture of high expectations. He has inspired all staff to bring about considerable improvements to key aspects of the school's performance since the previous inspection."

The proportion of pupils who achieved five or more GCSEs at grades A* to C including English and maths was above national average and teachers were said to have high expectations of what pupils are capable of achieving and "as a result, pupils are keen to rise to the challenge and make gains in their learning", reported Ofsted.

Mr Wilton said: "The recent Ofsted inspection was a fair and accurate analysis of the fantastic progress made by the school in recent months.

"We knew that the 2016 GCSE results placed us in the top proportion of schools in the country, but it was so encouraging to see Ofsted recognise these achievements in their recent report.

"The inspection team noted that there is a culture of high expectations across the school with 'high quality training' enabling teachers to provide top quality lessons as a matter of routine, with staff 'focused on improving outcomes for all pupils'.

"The inspectors were particularly impressed with the climate for learning and behaviour of our students, describing Elton as 'an orderly and calm place to learn'.

"The progress that has been made across the school is not through chance or by accident, but is due to a relentless focus on teaching and learning, while developing the talents of an outstanding team of staff. The report is testament to the efforts of those staff and to our students and their supportive families, who enable us to work in such an effective manner.

"We are not complacent and look forward to continuing to work together so that Elton can fully realise its potential as one of the very best schools in Greater Manchester."
