A MAIN town centre road will become one way as a bus is lane is created as part of the multi-million interchange development.

Part of Great Moor Street will become one way with traffic not being able to get on to Bradshawgate but will have to turn right on to Newport Street and go round.

Currently the road is closed to traffic from Bradshawgate as part of the £48 million transport interchange development with traffic being redirected up Trinity Street but once the interchange opens that route will be reinstated.

A Bolton Council spokesman said: “A new bus lane is set to come into effect in Bolton town centre to help traffic flow when the new £48 million transport interchange opens.

“The new lane will run west to east along Great Moor Street, from the interchange’s exit at St Patrick’s Church to Bradshawgate.

“The bus lane will only come into operation when the current roadworks on Great Moor Street are complete, which is currently scheduled for early Summer subject to weather conditions.”

Currently £1.7 million is being spent on Great Moor Street to improve the junctions, signalling, pedestrian access and road surfacing. leading to the temporary one-way system in place.

The spokesman said:”When the bus lane comes into effect all eastbound general traffic travelling on Great Moor Street will have to turn down Newport St.

“They will be able to access Great Moor Street from Bradshawgate – which they are unable to do under the current temporary one-way system.

“When Bolton Interchange opens, buses will exit the interchange on to Great Moor Street, next to St Patrick’s Church, and the dedicated lane will help buses get around the town centre more quickly.”

The new interchange is scheduled to open by early Summer. The transport interchange is being delivered by Transport for Greater Manchester in partnership with Bolton Council.

The £48 million scheme is being funded by the Greater Manchester Transport Fund and support the wider regeneration plans in the area.

It is hoped that the modern hub, which will replace the existing interchange in Moor Lane, will be up and running by early summer.

A new‘skylink’ bridge connecting the interchange and the adjacent railway station will be in place.
