A FATAL flat fire in the early hours of this morning is being treated as suspicious by police. 

A fire crew from Farnworth was among three that was called to the blaze at around 12.30am today.

Crews from Agecroft and Whitefield also attended the fire at Richmond Court in Berry Street, Clifton.

Following a search by firefighters, the body of a man was discovered inside the property.

Formal identification is yet to take place.

A joint investigation with Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service has been launched to establish the cause of the fire however it is now being treated as suspicious.

Residents from nearby properties were evacuated whilst the fire was extinguished and have all since been allowed back in to their homes.

Detective Chief Inspector Gwyn Dodd, of GMP’s Salford borough, said: “My thoughts are with the man’s family at this difficult time and we are working closely with GMFRS to establish the cause of the fire.

“Our enquiries are in the early stages however we are treating this as suspicious.

“Patrols have been increased in the area and anyone with any concerns is asked to speak to officers.

“If you have any information about what happened or how the fire started, please get in touch.”

The fire was in a first floor flat and firefighters used six breathing apparatus and three hose reel jets to tackle it.

The fire was under control shortly after 1am.

One fire engine remained at the scene this morning.
