THE new Horwich Leisure Centre is beginning to rise from the rubble and take shape in the town.

Work began on the site last year with the demolition of the current centre’s multi-storey car park in June.

A building has now begun to take form as it stays on track to open in 2018.

The steel frame structure currently houses the layout of what will become a fully-functioning centre, with work expected to be completed by September.

Construction has begun on a six-lane swimming pool and separate training pool and a six-court sports hall on the lower ground floor and a swimming pool viewing gallery, 100-station fitness suite multi-function studio with kitchen and reception area on upper floor - as well as changing room facilities.

In week 41 of the £10m project, jointly funded by Bolton Council and Bolton Community Leisure Trust, there has already been 230 meters of concrete and 413 tonnes of steel fabric used in the construction, with around 45 people working on the build.

This week will see work begin on creating the rooms inside the building and adding the electrics and mechanics.

Danielle Whitworth, site administrator, said they had aimed to source as much work as possible from local firms and keep engaged with the community.

She added: “We have also had fantastic feedback from the residents we have been engaging with in the community and have plans to support the Horwich Carnival. It has all been positive.”

Yesterday visitors got a first look at the leisure centre in Victoria Road as part of the Open Doors 2017 event.

The construction site was opened by builders Willmott Dixon as part of the national event aimed at attracting young people into a career in construction.
