THE future of Bury College still hangs in the balance after a crunch meeting to discuss its merger with the University of Bolton.

Governors at Tuesday's corporation meeting failed to make a decision on whether to pull out of the merger.

As The Bolton News reported last week, it was understood the college was getting cold feet over the planned merger with the University of Bolton and its future was due to be discussed on Tuesday.

Now it has emerged that another meeting will be held regarding joining up with the University of Bolton and Bolton College.

Charlie Deane, principal of Bury College, said: "No decision was made at the Corporation Board meeting last night and it was agreed there will be another meeting."

Under the Government's shake-up of post-16 education it was agreed to merge Bury College and Bolton College with the University of Bolton — making it one of the largest education providers in the country.

The merger of the University of Bolton and Bolton College will still go ahead as planned.

The merger of the two further education colleges with the University of Bolton was described by the department for education as innovative and was being being mooted as a national pilot.
