BRAVE Kyle Buckley is fighting the biggest battle of his young life.

The 12-year-old’s only hope of life-saving treatment now rests on him being accepted for trials into the aggressive form of cancer he suffers from.

His family, including mum Carol Buckley, aged 42, and step-dad Robert Coen, aged 52 have been tirelessly fund-raising for Kyle as they are aware some of the trials are only available abroad and they cost thousands of pounds.

The family is still reeling from the news that no further chemotherapy can be carried out for the rare muscle tissue cancer — Alveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma — which the youngster suffers from.

This means Kyle, from Deane, now must rely on being deemed suitable for trials into his disease.

Fund raising has raised enough money for the Make Kyle Smile campaign to send £17,000 to German cancer specialists who will test the youngster’s tumour to discover if it is suitable for treatment.

Here in the UK, Carol is waiting to hear from the Royal Marsden Hospital in London if Kyle will be accepted for a trial there.

Carol, who also has a three-year-old daughter, Ella, said: “I am waiting to hear from the hospital and feel helpless. Every day is vital to Kyle and I am just hoping to hear something very soon.”

Tragically, Kyle’s father died from bowel cancer when the youngster was just nine months old.

Although in severe pain, Kyle is bravely battling on and his supporters are organising fund-raising at every possible opportunity.

Every penny raised goes to help fund potential life-saving trials which are all the more vital now that doctors have said they cannot treat his cancer conventionally.

There have been sponsored walks, fairs and family fun evenings.

Businesses, pubs and shops have collected money in jars and individuals have donated to help Kyle.

Carol explained that the fund-raising is as vital as ever as the family is constantly searching for trials that could save her son’s life.

She said: “Everyone has been so kind but we won’t give up.

“I have to keep going for Kyle’s sake,” explains Carol.

In the past Kyle has responded well to the chemotherapy he has bravely undergone but the cancer has always returned.

Now he is unable to have any more chemotherapy or radiotherapy and an alternative form of treatment is needed.

But these treatments are potentially only available in the form of trials that have not been proven.

Carol added: “But they are our last hope and we are more than willing to give them a go.

“I will do anything to help Kyle.”

Kyle is not only suffering from pain because of the cancer, but previous treatment has left him with hearing loss.

Yet he continues to smile despite the pain and never complains.

“He is so brave and I just want to do my very best for him,” said Carol.
