FIRE crews were called out to a grass fire near Rivington Pike that is believed to have been started deliberately.

Residents spotted the flames on the hillside, close to the Chinese Gardens, on Sunday evening.

Many people on social media posted pictures of the incident and reported smoke billowing from the area close to Pigeon Tower.

The smoke and the flames could be seen for miles, with reports that it was visible from the M61.

There were also reports from some residents that walkers were having disposable barbecues up the hill on Sunday afternoon and leaving litter behind.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said firemen received the report of the blaze at about 7.30pm and two engines were sent from Bolton and from Horwich.

Fire engines were also dispatched from Chorley and Preston.

The crews were at the scene for two hours trying to contain the fire and left at around 9.30pm.

There were no injuries reported and the cause of the fire is not known.

But Chorley Fire Station crew manager Ian Turnbull said it was a “safe bet” the fire was started deliberately.

He said: “It is a nuisance. By doing this, people are tying us up. It’s the equivalent of a malicious call.”

Mr Turnbull said the fire was put out with beaters.
