THE family of the young dad who was seriously injured in a crash on Friday night are desperately clinging on to hope as he remains in a coma.

Curtis Constantine's father Carlton told The Bolton News that doctors had tried to bring him round from his medically induced coma yesterday but that the procedure had not been successful.

Curtis remains in a coma in the regional neurology unit at Salford Royal Hospital.

His family are heartbroken, said Mr Constantine senior.

He said: "We are all gutted. We just want him to get better."

Mr Constantine said that doctors had told the family that 23-year-old Curtis "could wake up today".

He added: "He could be fine. It could be one week. We just don't know."

Curtis was badly hurt when he was involved in a collision in Darwen Road, Bromley Cross, on Friday night.

He is believed to have been thrown through the car passenger window, and suffered head injuries and a shattered elbow.

A minibus and a Renault Clio were also involved in the accident. Two women in the Clio were treated for minor injuries.

Curtis' treatment in the Salford hospital unit has added poignancy for the Constantine family. Dad, Carlton was stricken with an inoperable brain tumour in 1998 and as a result had to give up his job as a printer.

His sight, mobility, speech and memory were all affected and he received treatment in the neurology unit at Salford Royal.

Eight weeks ago he suffered a stroke.

"It has been a terrible year," he said.

He said Curtis' mum Karen Owen, Carlton's ex-wife, was "in pieces" worrying about her son.

Curtis' 35-year-old sister, Leanne, is trying to keep strong for her family and they are all sharing the care of Curtis' son, five-month-old Harley, while his mother, Jessica Booth, stays at her partner, Curtis' bedside.

"We are all being strong for each other," added Mr Constantine, of Dickinson Close, Halliwell.

Since Curtis' accident, residents in Darwen Road have raised the issue of parking in the street.

Mr Constantine said: "People have said it is really, really bad up there, and that this was an accident waiting to happen.

"Who knows, it could be anything that caused this accident. I just want my son to get better."
