AN exciting collaboration will see two acts from either side of the ‘pond’ unite their musical talents.

On Sunday, The Met in Bury will present an evening of music from a trio of talented musicians.

Crossing Borders unites Canadian singer/songwriter Oh Susanna and English folk duo Hannah Sanders and Ben Savage - vocalist and guitarist in critically acclaimed folk band The Willows - presenting their music in a “unique collaboration”.

The musicians came together after a residential in Toronto where they worked on a 90-minute show that mixes their own material and new trio arrangements to create a varied concert show.

Juno-nominated and Genie award-winning songstress Suzie Ungerleider began performing as Oh Susanna in the mid-1990s and is celebrating the release of her new album A Girl in Teen City.

She described the show coming to Bury as “an intimate evening of stories, songs and lovely voices mixed in with some electric guitar so as not to make it too soft”.

She added: “We will be playing all together on a few of Hannah and Ben’s songs and a few of my songs.

“These shows are a part of a cultural exchange we are on called Crossing Borders. It is organised by the English Folk Dance and Song Society in conjunction with Folk Music Canada.

“The premise is that artists from the UK come to Canada, or vice versa, go on an artists’ retreat and emerge from the chrysalis with a melding of artistry. Then the artists perform together in Canada and the UK.

“So the audience will be witnessing a very rare and unique collaboration.”

An artist on the ‘rootsy side of things’, Oh Susanna’s sound draws from the deep well of early 20th Century folk, country and blues, yet rooted in storytelling skills.

The Bury show is described as a rare opportunity to see the three artists work together as they bring their collaboration to the UK for a short run.

Hannah has been touring the UK and Canada with Ben since last year.

She said: “Duet singing has always been a mainstay of folk music.”

The folk singer grew up travelling Europe with her family band, The Dunns, before pursuing a career as a cultural anthropologist. She met Ben in 2013, helping her record her first solo, before she went on to launch her debut album, Charms Against Sorrow, in February 2015 to critical acclaim.
