COUNCILLORS have welcomed plans to build a new playground despite concerns from neighbours.

The Department of Place at Bolton Council has submitted an application to create the four-piece playground in Newbeck Close, Horwich.

It will include a multi-play climber, a roundabout, a seesaw and a set of swings.

At the town council’s planning committee, on ThursdayHorwich town clerk Carol Hutchinson said there had been three objections from neighbours.

These were mainly about the impact on their lives, including noise disturbance, anti-social behaviour and traffic but there were some who called it a waste of public money.

But members were quick to dismiss the complaints.

Cllr Jim Bullock said: “It doesn’t sound like four pieces of equipment is going to cause too many traffic jams.

“I don’t think toddlers are going to create too much of a nuisance.”

The playground would be put on green space between house numbers three and five on Newbeck Close.

Cllr Kevin McKeon said: “I don’t think it’s going to cause any anti-social behaviour.

“I certainly do not think it is a waste of public money. I think it is money well spent.”

The 2.25m multi-play climber would be three levels and include a 1.2m-high slide up a ramp, a ladder or a ring climb.

There would also be a hidden seating area under the main deck where children can relax.

The roundabout would be 1m in diameter and the swings would have cradle seats.

A 1.2m-high steel boundary fence and a pedestrian gate will also be included.

Cllr Steven Chadwick said: “I endorse the comments from Cllr McKeon but I would also like to say that, given the amount of open green spaces that we have lost, it is nice to see something like this being added to Horwich.

“I welcome the development.”

The council voted unanimously to recommend the proposal for approval.

Bolton Council’s decision on the application has been delegated and will be made by senior planning officers.
