A PENSIONER has raised more than £750 for a Radcliffe church after embarking on a terrifying challenge abroad.
71-year-old David Kerwin, chairman of Radcliffe Heritage Society, took a trip to Spain where he zip-wired from a height of 300ft to raise money for Radcliffe Parish Church of St Mary.
The 720-metre-long challenge, that takes less than a minute to complete and reaches a top speed of 50mph is 720 metres long.
Mr Kerwin, a Radcliffe resident for most of his life, wanted to help the church as it continues to recover after the devastating floods in 2015.
He said: “As many people are aware, the buildings and surrounding area of the church was severely damaged during the floods.
“When I had reason to visit a few weeks ago I noticed that there were areas that still needed some work and I felt so welcomed by everybody that I felt I should do something to help.
“I really enjoyed the experience and would encourage anybody to do it.”
A JustGiving page was set up for the journey, which starts at Sanlucar de Guadiana Huelva in Spain and finishes over the border in Portugal and has so far raised £764.
“Mr Kerwin said: “I have been overwhelmed by the support so far and just encourage people to keep donating until at the end of the month when I will present a cheque to the church.”
