FANS of Peter Kay's Bafta-winning series Car Share have been left "heartbroken" by the show's final episode.

Hours before Tuesday night's season two finale, the comedian revealed it would be the end of the road for the popular sitcom about two supermarket employees who share their daily drive.

Viewers hoping to see Kay's John Redmond finally woo his carpool companion Kayleigh Kitson, played by Sian Gibson, were left "gutted" as he failed to reciprocate her advances.

Posting on Twitter, fans called for another series or at least a one-off Christmas special.

Dan McMahon wrote: "Can't accept Peter Kay saying there won't be a Series 3 or a Christmas Special of #CarShare. You can't leave it like that!"

Lucy Young wrote: "Omg gutted they didn't get together."

Sophie Lumb added: "Seriously peter kay #CarShare has not ended in the best way for there not to be another series...Peter kay you have hurt your fans there."

Rebecca Hall posted: "gutted they didn't get together in the end", while another user wrote: "Absolutely heartbroken."

Earlier on Tuesday Peter Kay told BBC Radio Manchester: "There's not going to be a series three."

As the shocked presenters tried to persuade him otherwise, he continued: "There's not... there's not. You've got to get out while the going's good."

Last year Peter Kay won two Bafta TV awards for the show, including best scripted comedy and best male performance in a comedy programme, for his role as assistant manager John.

While the pair's will-they-won't-they relationship quickly became a favourite aspect for fans after the show's launch in 2015, the Bolton comedian recently said he never intended it to turn into such a "subtle romance".

Filming took place in Bolton, WesthoughtonHorwichWalkdenLittle Hulton, Swinton, Bury, Irlams o’th’Height, Altrincham and Trafford.

While a second series has been ruled out, many on Twitter have called for a Christmas special to tie up the loose ends of John and Kayleigh's relationship.

For now though, it looks like it's the end of the road...

What is your response? The best episode was episode 3 when they went to the safari park after skipping work. The scene when they are back in the car and the image of their hair all ruffled up and scratch marks on Peter Kay's face and then you see the monkey in the back seat. Absolutely hilarious. It was a great episode!!
