COMMUTERS travelling from Bolton will need to use replacement bus services over the forthcoming bank holiday weekend.

From Saturday, May 27 until Tuesday, May 30 buses will replace Northern trains operating through Bolton.

This is part of the Great North Rail Project and trains will be unable to run while upgrade work is carried out and the route is electrified between Preston and Manchester.

Essential track and signalling work in the Bolton area as part of this project means trains need to be replaced with buses.

The £1 billion investment aims to deliver faster, greener, quieter and more reliable journeys from December this year.

Train users will be hit by further disruption on May 30 with members of the RMT union working at Northern set to go on strike for 24 hours.

Buses will replace all services between Bolton and Blackburn from May 27 until May 29. Buses will replace trains between Bolton and Preston from May 27 until May 30.

There will also be a limited train service between Salford Crescent and Manchester Victoria on May 27 with buses replacing trains on May 28 and 29.
