A TEAM of Bolton supermarket staff are playing their part in beating cancer.

The friends from Tesco Express in Kearsley are hoping to inspire women of all shapes and sizes to follow their lead and sign up for Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life.

The Tesco women, rallied together by Sarah Anderton, aged 27, from Farnworth, will be taking part in the Pretty Muddy obstacle challenge which takes place on July 8.

The six-strong team have all been affected by cancer, having lost friends and family members to the disease and have already raised £250 in sponsorship.

Ms Anderton said: "We all have such personal reasons for taking part and are really looking forward to making a difference.

"There’s a Race for Life event to suit everyone - it’s not about pounding the pavements or racing to the finish line - it’s about coming together to beat cancer sooner."

Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life, in partnership with Tesco, is an inspiring women-only series of 5k, 10k, Pretty Muddy, Marathon and Hiking events which raise millions of pounds every year to help beat cancer sooner by funding vital research.

Race for Life events will be taking place in Heaton Park, Prestwich, over the weekend of July 8 to 9.

The charity’s life-saving work relies on the public’s support. Funds raised last year helped pay for more than £23 million of scientific and clinical research in the North West.

Jane Bullock, Cancer Research UK spokesman for the North West, said: "Every day, around 110 people are diagnosed with cancer in the North West. That’s why we need women to pull on their leggings, limber up and join like-minded ladies committed to the cause. It’s time to unite, join the fight and help beat cancer sooner.

"By taking part in Race for Life, women can help raise funds for crucial research and make a real difference in the fight against cancer.

"Participants can choose to walk, jog or run around the course.

"It’s not about being first over the finish line - it’s the taking part that counts.
