ARTWORK produced by people with mental health issues is now on display in Radcliffe Library.

The work, called “Happiness: Artwork in Matchboxes”, was created in two workshops held to bring together adults in Radcliffe who have a history of depression.

The workshops, where matchboxes were transformed into a collection of vibrant, vertical books, was held in conjunction with Mental Health Awareness Week.

A wide range of people of different ages and abilities took part and were aided by creative engagement artists, Redfolio.

Karen Nolan, centre leader at Wellspring House, the spiritual centre where the art was created, said: “We were thrilled with the level of participation at the two workshops.

“Taking part in creative activities is good for mental health and wellbeing and a great way to meet people and to make new friends.

“Participants mastered techniques such as stamping, calligraphy and mark making and the fruits of their labour can now be seen in the town’s library.”

Feedback from the event, which was supported by Bury Council Township Community Fund, was very positive.

Chris Chambers, president of SOLCe, the organisation responsible for Wellspring House, said: “Working with Redfolio artists to involve residents in art has created a real buzz.

“We are all impressed by the quality of work produced in a very short time and we would love to run more events like this in the future.”

Building on the success of the workshops, Wellspring House is starting a regular Art for Wellbeing Group on Wednesday mornings.

Run by volunteers, the aim of the informal group is for people to get together, chat and make art.

The first session is on Wednesday, June 14 at 11am.
