VETERANS, civic leaders, the emergency services and the public all gathered this morning.

At 11am a short service was conducted by the Vicar of Bolton to honour and support the forces who serve for Queen and country.

Representatives from all the armed forces and standard bearers were present in Victoria Square to hear the Revd Canon Matt Thompson lead those gathered in the centre through prayers and a minutes silence.

The service culminated in wreath laying by the Mayor of Bolton, Cllr Roger Hayes and Gunner John Graham 103 Regiment 216 Battery Bolton.

TSMI Allan Bailey, aged 65, watched the service and said afterwards: "It was very, very good. I've been to quite a lot of these over a period of years and this was short but sweet."

He also praised the cadets who stood to attention throughout the 20 minute service.

Able Cadet Joshua Smith, aged 17, took part in the ceremony.

He said: "Days like today are really good. You get to know all the other cadets do and what those in the military do that are serving."

John Hayes, aged 67, is carer and happened to be in the town square as the service started.

He said: "I came across it by accident but I actually found it quite moving.

"When I think about what they have had to put up with, a service for their suffering and thinking about them even though they are long gone, I found it very moving."

Armed Forces Day is celebrated nationally today and similar events took place around the country.

After the service the public had chance to wander round stalls set up around the square, mostly dedicated to causes connected with the armed forces.
