A GROUP of pork pie-loving pals baked their own – and earned a crust for charity.

The Lancashire Pork Pie Appreciation Society organised a special bake off to raise cash for Macmillan Cancer Support.

The group gathered at the Black Bull pub in Edgworth to make their own savoury delights – and members tasted them to find a winner.

The best pork pie on the night was baked by Andy Neil, from Chapeltown, and the runner up was Andy Kernick.

Carl Abbott, from the Lancashire Pork Pie Appreciation Society, said the event on Saturday night had been a huge success.

Mr Abbott, aged 54, from Chapeltown, said: “We organised the pork pie making competition for Macmillan cancer charity.

“People cooked their own pork pies and then we tasted them and selected the best one. There were some really nice pies.

“We charged a £5 entrance fee and £2 to taste the pies. Everyone really enjoyed themselves. There were some tasty treats on offer.”

Donations are still coming in but My Abbott thinks the club may have raised more than £200.

And it wasn’t just pies to enjoy on the night – the Black Edge Brewery made a special brew designed to complement the pies on offer.

Pie PA, a pale, citrus, hoppy beer, was served up to society members – and the brewery donated £50 towards the final figure.

Once Andy Neil was crowned champion, vocal entertainer and comedian Andy Mudd took to the stage to end the night on a happy high.
