YOUNG time travellers experienced life on an ocean wave as they invaded Kearsley.

Pupils at Kearsley West Primary School were invited to step back in time for a week to wow youngsters about history.

And the past really did come alive for the excited youngsters, whose learning over a week focused on the subject, particularly medieval history.

The school held its popular Wow Week, where children throughout the school — with even nursery children taking part — spend a week studying a topic in detail and learning through fun activities.

Children enjoyed trips out and even enjoyed a medieval feast, complete with goblets of the finest water, experienced life as a royal and donned the fashions of the time much to the delight of the young historians.

Even the staff joined in the fun activities

Jackie Fitton, deputy headteacher, said: “Activities have included a trip to Smithills Hall in Bolton, a prince and princesses workshop where the children learnt about medieval times, an Anglo-Saxon workshop where the focus was on the different social statuses in Anglo-Saxon time.

“The children tried on clothes and studied artefacts.

“We also had a Viking workshop where there was discussion around how different Vikings lived and where they were from and also that they weren’t just vicious, they also had artistic talents — there was even a wedding at this workshop.

“One class have held a medieval banquet with traditional fare, music and dancing.

“ All the children had a medieval dressing up day — even the staff joined in.”

She added: “It’s been an action packed week.

"The children decorated the goblets and really enjoyed the dressing up, they always and gives the week the wow factor, making it memorable for them."

The medieval feast included brown bread rolls, and potage, which today is more commonly known as soup.

The school stages wow weeks every term to enthuse children about different subjects, devoting a week to studying them and bringing them alive for youngsters.

Previous weeks have included one in March when pupils at the school escaped the bad weather to enjoy a taste of sunny Spain.

Children also took part in an ICT/E-Safety Wow Week to ensure they can use the digital age to their advantage while ensuring they do not put themselves at risk.
