SCHOOLCHILDREN from Bolton picked up three medals at the opening of the 2017 Greater Manchester Summer School Games.

More than 2,000 school pupils from across the region gathered at Sport City’s Indoor Athletics Arena on Thursday for the opening ceremony, which was a celebration for the city of Manchester after the recent terror attack.

Pupils from Tottington High School, which arena attack victim Olivia Campbell attended, read the 'This Place' poem and others sung and danced to Ariana Grande’s ‘One Last Time’.

There were 25 competitions taking place across athletics, basketball, BMX, netball, football, rounders, new age kurling and many more.

Pikes Lane Primary's year five and six pupils took home the silver medal for dodgeball, Little Lever High won bronze in the under-13s football, and year five and six pupils from Egerton Primary School won bronze in Netball.

Yvonne Harrison, CEO of organisers GreaterSport, said: “What a fantastic day of school sport competition and a great opportunity to celebrate the city of Manchester.

"We are proud to be remembering those involved in the Manchester attacks as we know so many of the schools who attended have been affected. Our Greater Manchester Summer School Games event brought schools from all 10 boroughs together for an Olympic style competition, with high performing young athletes from across the county.

"We are delighted by the hard work of all involved including young leaders and volunteers.”

The sporting events took place at world-class locations including the National Cycling Centre, Sport City and the National Basketball Performance Centre.

The Bolton schools that participated were: Pikes Lane Primary, Little Lever High School, St Saviour CE Primary School, St Michaels Primary School, Clevelands Prep School, Gaskell Primary School, Egerton Community Primary School, St John the Evangelist RC Primary School, and The Orchards federation.

The Games also welcomed councillors, mayors, previous Olympians and young volunteers to celebrate the city of Manchester.
