A REVIEW into intimidation, bullying and harassment suffered by candidates at the recent General Election has been welcomed by a Bolton MP.
Chris Green said that the last election was ‘the worst I have known it to be’ for abuse.
Yesterday, the Prime Minister ordered an independent committee to investigate the problem of intimidation and recommend how to improve protection for candidates.
A number of Mr Green’s posters in Bolton West were vandalised during the campaign.
He said: “I have been involved in politics for many years and this year’s General Election was the worst I have known it to be.
“During the campaign, signs were destroyed with obscenities painted over them and there was intimidating behaviour both off and online.
“There is a real concern that this behaviour, if not stamped out, will lead to good people being put off from getting involved in politics.”
