THE final stage of a town centre roadworks scheme will be completed next week.

Work to transform Great Moor Street has been ongoing for the last four months, causing major disruption for drivers.

Overnight closures will be in force next week as engineers put down the final layer of surfacing on the road.

Improvements to the junctions, signalling, pedestrian access and road surface of Great Moor Street have been designed to help traffic flow when the new £48m transport interchange opens in September.

The road will be closed from its junction with Newport Street to Bradshawgate from 7pm on Monday to 6am on Tuesday. Newport Street will remain open.

From Tuesday to Thursday, Great Moor Street — from Soho Street to Bradshawgate — and Newport Street will close daily from 7pm to 6am.

Once the work is complete, from Monday, July 31, the temporary one-way system currently in place along Great Moor Street will be removed — with a new one-way lane and bus lane running in the opposite direction than it currently does.

The new lane will be operate from Newport Street towards Bradshawgate.

This will mean that drivers cannot turn onto Bradshawgate from Great Moor Street, and will instead need to use Newport Street and Trinity Street to get on to Bradshawgate.

All traffic will be able to access Great Moor Street from Bradshawgate, heading towards the interchange.

Bolton Council’s cabinet member for transport and highways, Cllr David Chadwick, said: “It is really exciting to see the new Bolton Interchange nearing completion.

“When it opens this work and the dedicated lane will help buses get around the town centre more quickly.

“The interchange, Newport Street and Great Moor Street, along with the new Bolton Central building will form an impressive gateway into the town centre.

“As always, we would like to thank motorists, residents and businesses for their patience and co-operation while work has been underway.”
