DELIVERY firm Whistl has officially opened its new super depot in Bolton — creating hundreds of new jobs.

The postal management service is the latest major international firm to move into the Logistics North employment hub in Over Hulton.

In total, 500 jobs are expected to be created at the site — 60 of which have already been ring-fenced to help the long-term unemployed get back into work.

Whistl began moving into the building in April, installing the machinery that enables it to process mail and parcels for distribution across the UK.

Last week, Whistl CEO Nick Wells was joined by council chiefs and representatives from the local community at the grand opening event, along with clients who wanted to see the state of the art facility.

Mr Wells said: “The opening of Bolton is a significant development for us at Whistl as we continue to invest in the business to provide clients with the highest quality and most efficient service.

"I am pleased that clients and representatives from the local community joined us today to celebrate this significant milestone for our company.”

Whistl's Logistics North site is a consolidation of its previous operations from Leeds and Warrington into one facility that has 33 per cent greater capacity for future expansion of its existing mail, packet and parcel and e-commerce business.

More than 2,000 people are now employed across the Logistics North development, which has attracted investment from companies including missile manufacturer MBDA.

Cllr Cliff Morris, leader of Bolton Council, added: “It is fantastic to see this depot open, and to see Whistl joining the likes of Aldi, Lidl and MBDA on this flagship development.

“We have been working closely with Whistl, through the Team Bolton Partnership, on employment and training opportunities for our residents.

“So far we have ring-fenced 60 vacancies for people who have been out of work long-term and more recruitment is planned for later in the year.”
