A DRIVING instructor has described his horror at seeing two cars racing down a busy main road in the middle of the day.

Mike Wayne was driving up Chorley Old Road towards Horwich on Sunday, at around 4.10pm after dropping of a pupil.

He then spotted a white car speeding up behind him in his rear view mirror, shortly followed by a dark coloured car racing after it.

He estimated the two vehicles were travelling at around 60 to 70mph and can be seen overtaking him on dashcam footage.

Soon after, the dark car lost control and almost caused an accident.

Mr Wayne said: “First I was somewhat startled when I noticed what was happening on this 30mph stretch of road but that turned to horror as I saw the dark coloured car lose control after steering onto the wrong side of the road then clipping the pedestrian island and almost colliding with a 4x4 vehicle coming down the hill in the opposite direction.”

The 61-year-old from Horwich reported the incident to GMP via email and sent them the footage of the two speeding drivers.

He said: “As a driving instructor, I see some absolutely appalling driving whilst I’m out on the road with my pupils so I cannot say I was shocked by this event but the nature of these two dangerous and selfish drivers could so easily have resulted in fatalities.”

Mr Wayne added that he fears reduction in police numbers is leading to an increase in people driving carelessly and dangerously on the road.

He said: “I’s plainly obvious that the number of police vehicles out on the roads detecting this abhorrent manner of driving has led to these uncaring types of drivers to believe they will get away with any manner of driving and this appears to have become epidemic in today’s driving culture.”
