HOMES in Bury should have their water back on after a leak in Whitefield but water pressure could take a while to return.

A leak in Stanley Road has affected customers in the BL9 and M45 postcodes.

It is not yet known how many homes are affected.

An update on the United Utilities website at 10am says the leak has been isolated water should begin flowing.

However, it could take up to two hours for water pressure to return to normal.

The statement adds: "Because there’s been some disturbance to the pipes in your area you may notice the water is a little cloudy or discoloured."

Advice from United Utilities states: "In most cases, discoloured water is not harmful, and can be cleared by running the first incoming cold water tap (usually in the kitchen) at a trickle until it clears."

Earlier today, a United Utilities statement advised customers: "You may have noticed that the water is coming out of your tap slower than usual or may have gone off altogether.

"We have one of our inspectors looking into this at the moment and as soon as we know what the cause of the problem is we’ll let you know.

"We’re sorry about this and will try and get your taps flowing normally as quickly as we can.

"We’ll keep you posted as soon as we know what’s causing the problem."

An update at 9.17am read: "A leak on Stanley Road affecting customers in BL9 and M45 has been spotted and reported to us.

"Our inspector has been to have a look and found this to be the cause for some of you having no water or just a trickle.

"In order to help get some water flowing through your taps again, our inspector has isolated the leak.

"You may find that it doesn’t flow as much as the pressure will be lower, but we’re working as quickly as we can on our pipe, so we can get your taps flowing back to normal again.

"A team of engineers have been requested to attend and should be on site as soon as possible. We’re sorry for the trouble this may be causing you and we will get your taps flowing normally again as quickly as we can."
