YOU have heard of the Balti — now try the 'Bolti'.

To celebrate 40 years of the Balti, a Bolton restaurant has created a new and unique curry recipe, which it has dubbed the ‘Bolti’ in honour of the town.

The Bolti has been developed by The Royal Balti House in Farnworth, the second best Indian in Greater Manchester, according to Trip Advisor.

The dish will have its grand unveiling this evening and The Bolton News will be there to try it out.

Manager Keith Meah and chef Anwar Hossein say they have created the dish, described as ‘spicier, more tangy and aromatic’, in response to demand from regular customers who had tried everything on the menu and wanted something bigger and bolder.

The Bolti has proved such a hit with locals that it is now set to be added to The Royal Balti’s regular menu.

Mr Meah said: “We’re great fans of the Balti – we specialise in them, and that’s reflected in our name

"We have many regulars who want to try something that’s not on the menu and so we create new dishes for them.

"This one is more tangy, spicier and more aromatic than the regular Balti and our customers love it."

The new recipe has been enhanced with achari pickle, along with one key ingredient, Lancashire Sauce made by family firm Entwistle’s of Ramsbottom.

The Balti House, in Market Street, has been asked to officially launch their new dish at the Bolton Food and Drink Festival, which takes place over the August bank holiday.

Mr Meah added: "To mark the 40th anniversary of the invention of the Balti in Birmingham, and the fact that we’re based in Bolton, we came up with the idea of calling our new dish the ‘Bolti’.

"We were then approached by the festival and asked to launch the dish there. We feel very honoured to be invited to take part and are greatly looking forward to sharing our new dish in August."

Bolton Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture, Cllr John Byrne, said: "It’s fantastic that Bolton is home to a unique, new curry recipe which could rival the famous Balti, and I can’t wait to try the unique Bolton version.

"Perhaps the restaurant should also change its name to The Royal Bolti, in honour of the dish!"

The new dish was taken for a taste test tonight.

Great British Bake Off's Luis Troyano was invited to try out the Royal Balti House's new dish, as were Cllrs John and Lynda Byrne; chef Mike Harrison; Lancashire Sauce maker, David Entwistle and The Bolton News reporter, Mary Naylor.

Mr Troyano admitted he had never heard of Lancashire Sauce before, produced by hand by David Entwistle in Ramsbottom.

Mr Troyano said: "I was really happy to be invited to try the Bolti.

"It was without a doubt the best I have ever had and I'm not just saying that.

"This restaurant is amazing, it was really delicious, a great consistency and that sauce is amazing.

"You could get the overtones of the mustard, vinegar and turmeric.

"Adding the sauce to rice and dipping naan in was really nice. You could definitely tell the sauce was in there."

Mr Meah was thrilled with how the night went and while he was pleased everyone enjoyed it he expected nothing less.

Deputy Mayor, Cllr Lynda Byrne was also a big fan of the 'Bolti' which she hopes will become a regular feature on The Royal Balti House's menu.

The restaurant put out quite spread of Bolti's, a chicken tikka version, lamb, vegetarian and a king prawn version.

Mr Meah advised all the guests a traditional Balti was well suited to fish and had procured some of the largest prawns the guests had ever seen.

Mike Harrison, a consultant chef with the Bolton Food and Drink Festival said: "The things that make it different are the achari spice and lime pickle and that local flavour doesn't stand out but it enhances it.

"I'd say it's a healthy seasoning as opposed to salt."

Lancashire Sauce's maker, David Entwistle, who uses a recipe his grandma Mary Entwistle came up with, said: "This new curry is great, wonderful really. A lot of people who haven't tried Lancashire Sauce won't know what to expect but you have even more flavour when you add a splash."
