A SPONSORED sleepout aimed to recognise the plight of the homeless is being held in Radcliffe next month.

Worsley Cares Sleepout 2017, is a fundraising event held by Worsley Rotary where sleepers are given a cardboard box and a plastic bag and asked to ‘rough it’ for a night.

The aim is to raise as much money as possible for homeless people in the area whilst raising awareness at the same time.

Last year’s event raised more than £7,000 and organisers say they want to break the £10,000 barrier this time around.

Tony Jackson, community service chair for Worsley Rotary, said: “Coming along to a ‘sleep over’ shows a personal commitment and recognition to the plight of the homeless and the charity organisations that directly support them.

“By being part of the sleepout, those involved are creating an event that we hope will be brought to the attention of local and central government.

“The aim is to bring like-minded people together in common cause and is a collective demonstration of Rotary’s overarching motto, Service Above Self."

This year will be the third sleepout that has been held.

Mr Jackson added: “Our previous events have shown that as well as supporting a very worthwhile cause it is an excellent way of a community and individuals coming together to enjoy themselves but also for individuals to make new friends and for groups to make connections.”

This year’s event will take place on September 29 at Giants Seat Scout Camp off Ringley Road West, Radcliffe.

Sleepers are encouraged to raise as much money as possible through getting sponsorship from friends and family with a minimum of £100 per person being asked for.

The target for donations to be handed in is October 30 so both sleepers and supporters can help towards the total fundraising target for the whole event. If people are planning on sleeping out, now is the time to e-mail friends, family, and colleagues to help get contributions.

Scouts will provide a camp fire and food for a minimal cost with 'lights out' at 11pm and breakfast served at 6am.
