THE winners of a gardening competition run for people living in homes managed by Six Town Housing and their communities have been announced.

Of the nine winners where prizes were awarded, six lived in Radcliffe.

This year the annual competition received 158 entries from across the borough for categories such as Best Communal Garden, Best Individual Garden and Most Improved Garden.

Winners in most categories received £100 in gardening vouchers, while the winner of the Young Gardener award received a mix of gardening, toy and book vouchers.

Mick Hilton, chair of Chesham Fold TRA, who won the Contribution to the Community category in 2015 and Unsworth tenant Marilyn Lees, who won the Best Individual Garden category last year, judged to competition.

John Merrick, neighbourhoods director at Six Town Housing, said, “Our annual competition celebrates the hard work and beautiful gardens of tenants, residents and community groups who make their area look great for the benefit of everyone living there.

“The number of gardens that are entered into the competition is increasing every year, with 50 more nominations this year than in 2016.”

Cheryl Agie, who helps to maintain the Community Garden in Gingham Park, Radcliffe said: “We started working on the garden in February this year but didn’t expect to win as we are first timers and novice gardeners so we are really happy. The idea for the garden was formed when the local Tenant and Resident Association accessed funding and people from the estate asked if it could be used to get some planters.”
