REPTILES, kung fu and donkey rides were just some of the attractions that families enjoyed at the second ever LionsFest.

A flood of people headed to The Den in Cunningham Road as Westhoughton Lions Rugby Club put on a show for the community.

As well as a funfair, the club hosted a rugby tournament as well as a dance group and a wrestling tournament.

And youngsters also submitted their entries into the competition to name the Westhoughton Lions mascot.

There were also information stands available for the community, including the workers at Mucky Munchkin who were there to provide more information about their nursery.

The event was rounded off with a firework display before it finished at 11pm.

The second ever LionsFest came after the club gained planning permission to build a brand new clubhouse at The Den.

The plans were drawn up as the current facilities at the site were judged to be unsuitable.

The two-storey building would include a main viewing club room area, kitchen, home and away changing rooms, showers, toilets, disabled facilities, an office, a first-aid room, a plant room and a referee’s room.

There would also be a hardstanding area for pedestrians and car parking.

Andrew Parkin, chairman of Westhoughton Lions said he was hoping that it would enable to club to be more of a hub for the community.

He said: "For the club itself, it would open up a lot more doors for us. The new facilities would mean that we could invite many other teams down and run tournaments. But it would benefit the whole community. We would have a community room downstairs that could be used by local groups.

"The new facilities will cover a very wide spectrum in terms of what will be offered. So we are hoping it will help both the club and the wider community."

It came three years after the club got permission to build larger clubhouse in March 2014.

But according to the planning statement submitted with the application, a smaller building had to be designed due to money woes — a result of the Rugby Football League withdrawing funding for the project.
