NORTHERNERS are famous for their friendly attitudes – and Bolton's theatre is hoping to prove that theory right!

The Octagon wants its supporters out in force so it can claim the crown of the UK's Most Welcoming Theatre.

The town centre venue is in the running for the 2017 award which will be4 decided by a public vote.

More than 175 venues across the country are competing to take home the title and the 12 regional and national winners of the vote will be announced on September 29.

Octagon chief executive Roddy Gauld said: "It’s very exciting to be nominated for this award.

"Our staff and volunteers here at the Octagon are passionate about theatre and about sharing theatre with the public. They are a fantastic and extremely friendly team, and this nomination is a testimony to their positivity, hard work, and warmth.

"We hope that our audiences have enjoyed their visits here at the Octagon and always feel welcome, whether it’s when they come to see a show, participate in one of our theatre groups, or visit our café for a bite to eat."

In May the Octagon revealed plans for a £10 million redevelopment, the most comprehensive in the theatre’s 50-year history.

It includes plans to demolish large sections of the town centre building to help create a new space around the main auditorium, as well as revamped café and bar areas.

Voting has already opened for the UK’s Most Welcoming Theatre 2017, in association with Smooth Radio, and voters have until noon on September 19 to pick their favourite.

The awards are an opportunity for audiences to celebrate their local theatre, or a theatre that they have particularly enjoyed visiting, and all that theatre does for their community.

They are the only nationwide awards to honour outstanding achievement in theatre throughout the United Kingdom.

Julian Bird, chief executive UK Theatre, added: "Most Welcoming Theatre is a chance for audiences to celebrate their local theatre and for venues to shout about the incredible work they are doing day in day out.

"Theatres are the backbone of communities across the country and this campaign highlights the vital work they do."

This year’s ceremony will take place at London’s historic Guildhall on October 15 when the overall winner will be revealed.
