THIS picture shows demolition work being carried out on a section of Rumworth Road bridge at Lostock railway station.
In the shot you can see the one of the final pieces of the bridge, built in 1915, being lifted by a huge crane.
Only the half of the bridge spanning the Wigan line is being replaced due to it not being high enough to take electric cables.
The side spanning the Preston line is undergoing strengthening work but may be replaced in future.
Eagle-eyed readers may notice that the old bridge was built in small, manageable sections assembled and riveted on site as workers would not have had access to power.
Network rail said the concrete floor of the new bridge would be put in place by the end of this week.
The next steps will then be to reinstall services such as gas and electricity and then reinstate the highway.
Rumworth Road is expected to remain closed until November.
