WORK is continuing today on a burst water main that has closed a major road in Moses Gate.

As reported, residents were left without water for several hours on Thursday night after the incident next to the railway station.

It is believed the burst was caused by part of the road collapsing near the railway's banking.

There has been widespread disruption due to the closure of the junction at Bolton Road and Egerton Street and traffic to and from Bolton town centre is having to make a 2.5 mile detour via Bradford Road.

People have complained of dirty water and low pressure as a result of the burst.

It is not know how long the junction will remain closed for while United Utilities and Network Rail carry out extensive repairs.

There was traffic chaos yesterday as motorists tried to deal with the closure.

In an update this morning, United Utilities apologised to resident that are experiencing poor pressure this morning and said that due to the location and complex nature of the work it is ongoing, despite engineers making good progress.

A statement said: "We are very sorry if you are experiencing poor pressure this morning. Our team of engineers are making good progress on the repairs, however due to the location and the complex nature of this work, this is still ongoing.

"We will continue to update this message throughout, and our apologies once again for any inconvenience this is causing.

"Thank you for your patience."
