THERE are not enough good or outstanding schools in Bolton according to the borough's education chiefs.

They say that the proportion of secondary schools judged at grade one or two is an area which 'requires further improvement'.

More than 10 per cent of schools are judged to require improvement or are inadequate — although the majority are graded as good.

Figures according to Watchsted, which monitors Ofsted inspections, show that 12.8 per cent are in need of improvement and 6.7 per cent are inadequate.

But they also show 61.4 per cent of schools are good and 19.1 per cent are outstanding

The figures cover 19 schools and 18,616 pupils.

As many secondary schools have converted or are in the process of converting into academies, they are technically new schools and subject to a new Ofsted inspection.

The schools rated as inadequate and placed into special measures – meaning the school is failing to give children an acceptable level of education – are Smithills School and UTC Bolton.

Last year's GCSE results showed that results were below the national average performance in all four headline measures – progress eight, attainment eight scores, grade C or better in English and maths GCSEs, and achieving the English Baccalaureate as shown on department for education website

A council report stated: "Work is already under way in Bolton to support schools to understand the complexities of the new secondary school accountability framework as there are complicated rules on the eligibility of various subjects, qualifications and examinations bodies all of which affect the overall performance values.

Outstanding schools include Canon Slade School, St James' CE High School, and Eden Boys School.

A Bolton Council spokesman said: "The local authority continues to support the system of secondary schools and academies in improving attainment. All schools are members of the Bolton Learning Alliance which provides headteachers with access to a range of resources, such as specialist leaders of education (SLEs) and peer support.

"All schools are committed to improving standards of education and we are active in supporting them to do so."
