A PRIMARY school has revealed plans for an extension that will create six new classrooms.

Blackrod Primary School submitted its planning application for the proposed construction in August as it looks to expand its facilities and refurbish the current building.

The extension at the Manchester Road school would be two storeys, with a parapet approximately 10 metres high, built at the rear of the property.

There will also be a single storey link corridor constructed, which would connect the school and the new extension.

A design and access statement submitted with the application said: "The new rooms to the extension will mainly consist of six new classrooms, a resource area, WCs, stores, ancillary spaces and circulation.

"The existing building will largely remain the same with some internal refurbishment. The rooms generally consist of academic classrooms, offices, WCs and ancillary spaces.

"There will be a slight increase to the rear hard play area to meet the children’s basic needs and fall in

line with the guidelines of BB103 to accommodate the increased number of children."

The planned extension comes after Bolton Council increased the number of pupils going into reception from 30 to 45 last year following a record demand for places.

This means it will grow from 210 to 315 pupils over the next four years.

The statement continued: "The existing site is partially surrounded by mature trees to the perimeter. There is a large grassed playing field.

"The proposed extended play area to the rear will continue to be tarmac. The existing pupil entrance is too narrow for the increased amount of pupils; we propose to widen it accordingly while retaining the same style. No trees are to be affected.

"There will be tarmac paths around the extension and a widened tarmac path connecting the pupil

entrance to the extension.

"There will be no external change to appearance of the existing building.

"The extension will be clad in dark grey/black brick to the ground floor and dark grey fibre cement

cladding panels to the first floor.

"The new windows and doors will be dark grey aluminium. Any rainwater goods will be dark grey/black. The reason behind this is to create a more contemporary building that compliments the red brick and slate roof of the existing."
